Stoic Japan can emerge stronger again

The common man in Japan is a revelation on facing and dealing with vast devastation even as the world’s worst ever nuclear disaster seems to be unfolding. Mother Nature has done her worst in this land with first a massive earthquake followed rapidly by the disastrous tsunami which triggered the nuclear crisis.
But it looks like Nature still has more in store to test the strength of the Japanese people. Freezing blizzards have now heaped even more misery with snow on the worst hit city of Sendai hindering rescue operations on the fifth day. Each day since the quake has brought worse news and with the humanitarian crisis growing to epic proportions, the question is: how much more can the people of Japan take?
Many of us may find the situation scary – for some it is even too depressing to follow the news anymore, the Japanese have no option but to survive and rebuild their country. They’ve shown us their mettle after the Second World War and they’re earning that respect again as they maintain their calm and poise. No looting or frustration visible here as they calmly form single-file queues outside food-stores and for water and fuel.
Even as questions arise about the way the nuclear crisis is being handled by the Japanese and international authorities, the people of Japan are rallying together with their fortitude and solidarity setting an example for the rest of the world. A homeless man serving hot meals to other survivors at his restaurant and a bucket brigade fetching water from a swimming pool for other bathers are just a couple of the heart-warming scenes. The Japanese are not strangers to natural calamities. Holding their personal trauma at bay they are taking up individual responsibility to overcome the latest disasters with grace and resilience.
